1013 - Elementary Japanese I - 3 credit hours
Designed for students with no previous training in or knowledge of Japanese, offers simultaneous development of skills in speaking, reading, aural comprehension, and writing.  Formal and colloquial speech forms will be treated in the course's spoken segment and the hiragana and katakana syllabaries (the Japanese writing system) will be introduced in the written component along with a brief introduction to kanji characters, all within a cultural context. Note: Japanese 1013 is not open to native speakers.  Course rotation: Fall. 

1023 - Elementary Japanese II - 3 credit hours
Continues the study of elementary Japanese, focusing on complex patterns, grammar structures, culture, and conversation.  It will introduce more kanji characters as well as continue to stress students' development of reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in Japanese. Prerequisite: Japanese 1013, two years of secondary-school Japanese, or permission of the instructor.  Course rotation: Spring.        

2013 - Introduction to Modern Japanese Civilization - 3 credit hours
This survey will cover such aspects of modern Japanese culture as language and literature, traditional art, geography, society, politics, family, education, comic fiction, and current issues. Lectures will be in English. Course rotation:  Spring,  contingent upon student enrollment.
