Biography:

Dr. Stephens has taught in the School of Professional Counseling at Lindsey Wilson College since 2007. He previously taught in the Counseling Programs in The University of Alabama system for 10 years; 7 years on the Tuscaloosa campus, and 3 years at the Birmingham (UAB) campus. During his tenure at UAB Dr. Stephens served as the Coordinator of the Rehabilitation Counseling Program and was responsible for tripling enrollment and procuring CORE accreditation. He has also taught as an adjunct at Auburn University, Florida State University, and Mississippi State University.


Dr. Stephens has worked as the director of a counseling center, served as the coordinator of a statewide rehabilitation program, and worked in private practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor in Alabama. He has more than 30 years experience in the fields of counseling, counselor education, rehabilitation, and consultation.


Dr. Stephens worked for five (5) years as a Research Scientist at a national Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (RRTC) at Mississippi State University. At the RRTC he was responsible for designing, conducting, and publishing research studies associated with the evaluation of client and program outcomes.


Dr. Stephens is the founder and principal of StarPath Ventures, a private consulting business that assists agencies and educational institutions with program assessment methodology, the development and implementation assessment instruments, and staff training. He has consulted with more than twenty (20) state agencies throughout the U.S. in developing data collection instrumentation for program evaluation and planning. Dr. Stephens served as a consultant in the development of a nationally standardized web-based data and case/program management system for programs serving rehabilitation clients throughout the U.S. During his career he has been involved in procuring more than five (5) million dollars in external program funding.


He has served in leadership roles at the local, state, regional, national and international levels in a variety of professional associations. He is an active member of the American Counseling Association, National Rehabilitation Counseling Association, the Association for Specialist in Group Work, and the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. His research and writing interest are in the areas of gerontology, group work, the self-help genre, and counselor education.
