Unit Mission
Statement
The mission of the Education Division
is to prepare candidates in a Christian learning environment with
the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required to be successful,
reflective teacher-leaders in the 21st century.
The secondary education program offers several challenging and
rewarding Bachelor of Arts degree programs and one Bachelor of
Science degree program that lead to the granting of the Kentucky
Provisional Certificate through the Kentucky Education Professional
Standards Board.
- Biology Education 8-12 (BS degree)
- Secondary Education 8-12 Program with majors in English,
mathematics, or social science (BA degrees)
In addition, there are P-12 BA degree programs which can also
lead to secondary teaching positions: Art Education P-12,
Integrated Music Education P-12, Physical Education P-12, and
Physical Education/Health P-12.
Candidates are assigned a content area advisor and work with an
education advisor as they progress through their specific content
requirements and through the sequential professional education
requirements to earn a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science
degree.
Degree Requirements
A. General Education
Requirements: 36-47 hours
- Principles of Psychology (PSYC 1003) is a prerequisite for EDUC
3123 and EDUC 3143 - 3 hours
Note: Biology Education 8-12
majors should choose general education courses that meet biology
major prerequisite requirements in order to fulfill program
requirements within or close to 128 hours.

Note: Biology majors are
advised to use Chemistry for the liberal arts elective studies in
depth requirement.

courses required for a BS degree in Biology Education 8-12 are

requirements.
Note: An English Major with
Secondary Education certification may require more than 128 hours
to complete.
3 - Mathematics (BA)
Note: Please see Mathematics for

4 - Social Science (BA)
Note: World Civilization I:
Prehistory to 1500 (HIST 2233) or World Civilization II: 1500 to
Present (HIST 2243) are strongly recommended as electives to
strengthen preparation for the content area of the Praxis II
exam.
Note: Please see Social Science
for a complete list of major requirements. While the major is
social science, the secondary certification is earned in social
studies.
D. General Electives: 1-5
hours
Exit Criteria
Graduation requirements for candidates are as follows:
- Minimum 2.5 Cumulative GPA (2.75 for candidates entering after
Fall 2012);
- Minimum 2.5 Content/Emphasis Area GPA (2.75 for candidates
entering after Fall 2012);
- Minimum 2.5 Professional Education GPA (2.75 for candidates
entering after Fall 2012);
- Completion of the appropriate PRAXIS Principles of Teaching and
Learning (PTL) exam and the appropriate content exam(s);
- Successful completion of all program requirements and
assessments;
- Successful completion of Supervised Student Teaching (EDUC
4600), including all course requirements with positive evaluations;
and
- Successful completion of Stage III Exit Portfolio.
