Journalism
The Journalism Program at Lindsey Wilson
College is housed as an emphasis within the English Department and
stresses the development of effective communication skills.
The emphasis seeks to develop each student's
potential in textual, oral, visual, and multimedia
communication. Students have an opportunity to gain practical
experience and build a portfolio with RaiderView, the
student newspaper of Lindsey Wilson College, along with
professional internships within the field of journalism and
communication.
Program Distinctions
The study of journalism at LWC is a unique experience designed
to fulfill the personal and professional needs of all students.
Unlike some academic environments where students may find
themselves lost and forgotten within a large department, those
studying journalism at LWC receive individual attention and
specialized instruction needed to succeed in the contemporary media
environment. A special emphasis is placed on the practical
application of writing, photography, and media design.
Students also have an opportunity to gain experience and
build a portfolio with RaiderView, the student
newspaper and online news magazine, and Orpheus, the
campus literary journal. In addition, students are encouraged to
participate in professional internships.
Why choose Journalism?
The field of journalism is undergoing an exciting change as the
delivery of news moves almost exclusively into the Digital Age. As
jobs in the traditional media are phased out, new and different
opportunities are emerging. Students with degrees in journalism can
expect a wide variety of jobs in the professional arena. The
strength of the degree lies in its flexibility in the contemporary
job market. Candidates may pursue specialized roles in fields such
as journalism, public relations, business, information technology,
education, corporate communication, marketing and promotion,
advertising, and many other areas. In fact, careers in
communication are considered to be one of the fastest growing areas
of employment to date. A degree in the journalism emphasis can also
provide an excellent foundation for graduate studies.
