Simulation Learning & Clinical Experiences

The Nursing Simulation Learning Center (SLC) is housed in the Robert & Carol Goodin Nursing & Counseling Center, Room 109 on the lower level. The lab consists of 3500 square feet with a movable wall to allow for classroom space separate from the simulation area. The simulated hospital area contains two separate suites, one suite contains a specialty suite for Obstetrics and Gynecology where Sim-Mom resides, and one intensive care unit (ICU) suite where Sim-Man 3G resides. These state of the art simulators allow nursing faculty to prepare nursing students for real life clinical experiences. The suites are constructed to allow video recording of student learning experiences for use with debriefing and review of learned skills. Students can practice and simulate procedures in a safe learning environment prior to performing procedures on live patients. The hospital setting also contains four hospital room settings that contain one additional Sim-Man Classic DSC_1056.pngsimulator, Five year old Pedi Pals Simulator for Advance Patient Care, Life Form Advanced Care Manikins Geri and Keri, and other simulation equipment. The lab contains computerized nursing stations where students learn to use Electronic Medical Records through Sim-Charting and Case Studies. The most current technological advances are employed. Students learn hands-on adult and pediatric patient assessment, communication techniques, medication administration, as well as a multitude of skills required of registered nurses. 

The LWC Nursing Division Simulation Learning Center (SLC) is designed to imitate the clinical environment and provides the opportunity for students to demonstrate knowledge and skills learned within the nursing program, as well as, the opportunity to practice decision making and critical thinking. Simulation is a safe learning environment to practice rare and critical events, and it provides objective feedback to students.  Learning opportunities in the simulation lab afford students an effective way to increase clinical competence, to build confidence in skills, experience repetitive practice, and enhance technical, behavioral and social skills.  The SLC provides an arena for reflective learning through debriefing feedback, interviewing and physical examination skills.
