** Correction to minutes from last meeting (Feb. 17, 2010) were
reviewed and approved. Let the minutes show that a tour of the
Doris and Bob Holloway Health & Wellness Center occurred
following the conclusion of the meeting.
Suggestion was made by Randy Burns to post minutes on the Alumni
section of the Lindsey Wilson website. Members of the council
thought this would be a great move and facilitate alumni
association members' ability to be better informed about the
activity of the association leadership council, as well as provide
an opportunity for the council to "go green" by saving the paper
used to mail minutes to all members. Randy stated that this would
begin starting with the minutes from this meeting.
As of the date of the meeting, 17 alumni and friends of LWC have
committed to the Alumni trip to Paris, scheduled for Sep. 12-19,
2010. This number is not set in stone and also does not include LWC
staff such as the Luckeys and the Burns. According to the
travel agent, there is room for 30.
The Keeneland event was a success with good attendance.
The upcoming Louisville event at the Kentucky Center for the Arts
is June 11, 2010. We will also host a Bowling Green event at the
Hot Rods which game on July 26, 2010.
The next Alumni Council meeting will be at 11 a.m. CT on
July 14, 2010, at Mulligan's Restaurant at the Pines at Lindsey
Wilson.
The 5K Run/Walk in Versailles, Ky., sponsored by Nancy Fouser
will be June 19, 2010. This is a fund-raiser for a LWC endowed
scholarship fund started by Mrs. Fouser. Any alumni interested in
participating are encouraged to do so.
The Lindsey Wilson alumni service day committee will communicate
in the coming weeks to begin planning on the Lindsey Wilson Alumni
Service Day for Columbia to take place in July.
Randy shared with the council that he told the Admissions Office
that alumni are willing to assist and participate at
student-recruitment events in local communities. The Admissions
Office is very interested and appreciative of our involvement in
that venture and will contact the Alumni Office to begin discussion
of the venture.
The medallion for the 50-year class reunion was on
display. A total of 17 people are expected to attend.
The discussion of moving alumni council meetings to various
locations around the state was reopened after being tabled at the
last meeting. The discussion ended with the lack of a motion. The
council maintains the prerogative to host meetings on a
case-by-case scenario at remote locations if it should choose. A
primary concern shared by several was that it would eliminate an
opportunity for alumni council members to return to campus.
Kenneth Jessee made the motion that teleconferencing be offered
for council meetings, but to be used only under circumstances when
an emergency might exist preventing council members from traveling
to attend the meeting in person. The alumni director will use
his/her discretion to determine if this will be offered on a
case-by-case situation. Motion was seconded by Allysa Gooden. The
motion passed unanimously.
Five students have applied for the Walkway Scholarship. The
committee will select the recipient and then notify the
council.
Randy began a discussion about plans for the Blue Raider Travel
Program. He stated that in addition to a "big" trip each year, he
would also like to offer a shorter, more inexpensive bus-tour trip
beginning in summer 2011. Possible destinations discussed for a
four- to five-day trip included Washington, D.C.,
Savannah-Charleston, Chicago, and Branson, Mo. Possible travel
ideas for the bigger, weeklong trip for 2011 included an Alaskan
cruise, Hawaii, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, and a Holy Land
tour. Destinations will be selected at the July 2010
meeting.
The council then entered into a discussion, led by Randy, about
what many alumni programs refer to as "Lifelong Learning
Opportunities." This could include programs and events including
"Alumni College"; a 2-3 summer retreat on campus where different
classes, reunions and fun activities would be held. At many other
colleges, alumni stay in dorm rooms during the event. This would
also be a mind-set behind other events and travel destinations that
the association would promote by attempting to always provide a
learning component to what we do. After receiving very positive
feedback about the idea, the council tabled the conversation until
a future meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:10 p.m.
Respectfully submitted:
Ms. Bonnie Greenwalt
