Online Education Graduate Program Targets 'Teacher as Leader'

Posted on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 [3:02 PM]

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson College will offer a 100 percent online master of education program, beginning this fall.

Called "Teacher as Leader," the 10-course, 30-hour graduate program is designed to help teachers become more effective in the classroom while also strengthening their respective schools.

The program, which is for Kentucky residents who are full-time teachers, will lead to the Kentucky Leadership Endorsement and a rank change.

"One of the reasons we created an online program was to eliminate travel for graduate students," said LWC Education Division Chair Linda Young. "Teachers already have enough stress in their life, and by creating a fully online graduate program, we can offer them an innovative learning experience that will make them better teachers while reducing the time and cost of travel."

As part of the program, students will develop a professional leadership growth plan in consultation with an LWC faculty member; design and present a professional development workshop in their school; and complete an action research project in their classroom.

Students will integrate the three projects into their capstone.

"In addition to making the students more effective teachers, the program will work with teachers to find solutions to challenges within their schools," Young said. "We don't want to produce only stronger teachers, but we want to help our students become leaders by strengthening schools throughout Kentucky."

Young said the new graduate program will offer a lot of personal attention.

"Although this will be an online program, there will be a great deal of of personal attention," she said. "Students will maintain personal contact with their professors and fellow graduate students through various channels, including weekly online meetings."

The program will include online tutoring and face-to-face group meetings. Students will also meet with an LWC faculty member, who will make a visit to the graduate student's school at least once a semester.
