COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Area residents have two
opportunities to take in the Christmas spirit this weekend.
The Lindsey Wilson Concert Band will present its annual
Christmas concert on Friday, Dec. 2, and the Lindsey Wilson Singers
will perform at the Mammoth Cave "Cave Sing" on Sunday, Dec. 4.
On Friday night, Director of Instrumental Ensembles Tim Allen will lead the Lindsey Wilson Concert
Band. The concert begins at 7 p.m. CT in Biggers Sports Center, 360
Spickard Drive. Admission is free.
The program will feature a diversity of musical styles from over
the centuries. One of the special arrangements to be performed is
"Men of Good Will," by Benjamin Britten. The piece, taken from the
legendary Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps' 1991
performance, features the LWC Concert Band percussion section.
Then on Sunday afternoon, the Lindsey Wilson Singers will
perform at the 32nd-annual "Cave Sing" in Mammoth Cave. The event,
which is also free, begins at 2 p.m. CT in the Mammoth Cave National
Park visitors center. Guests will depart for the cave.
In addition to the Lindsey Wilson Singers, who are under the
direction of Director of Choral Programs Gerald Chafin, the "Cave Sing" will also
feature the Commonwealth String Quartet and Glasgow Brass Quintet.
Following the concert, refreshments and a visit from Santa Claus
will be held at the Mammoth Cave Hotel.
This is the second time the Lindsey Wilson Singers have
participated in the event, whose origins date to the late-19th
century. The Singers' inaugural appearance at the event was in
2006.
The first "Cave Sing" was held in 1883, when area residents held
a Christmas celebration in Mammoth Cave. The current incarnation of
the "Cave Sing" was first held in 1980.
