Comical Don't Dress for Dinner to be Performed Oct. 31, Nov. 1, 3 & 4

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College Theatre Program will present the farce Don't Dress for Dinner Oct. 31, Nov. 1, 3, 4.

The play -- which is directed by LWC Assistant Professor of Theatre Robert Brock -- will be performed at 7:30 p.m. CT Oct. 31, Nov. 1, 3 and at 2 p.m. CT Nov. 4. Tickets are $5 for the general public.

Don't Dress for Dinner is about Bernard, a married man who plans to enjoy a weekend with his mistress, Suzanne, at his country home only to have his wife, Jacqueline, spoil things when she cancels a trip to see her mother. A French play first produced in Paris in 1987, Don't Dress for Dinner was adapted into English and produced on Broadway and at regional theaters.

"Don't Dress for Dinner is one of the funniest plays ever written. … It is a laugh a minute," Brock said. "The complications get piled on … and the lies and the panic, but everything ends up all right in the end, and there's actually no infidelity."

Although the play's characters learn lessons by the end of the story, the plot has no larger message for the audience, Brock said.

"The play has no redeeming value," he said. "There is no great moral lesson, there is not great educational lesson. If you want to laugh, come to see this play."

Don't Dress for Dinner is the first comedy Brock has directed at LWC since joining the college's faculty. He said students have enjoyed learning how to perform a comedy.

"It's funny, but it's not easy (to produce)," he said. "They are finding that you can't just be up there and deliver lines and think that will get a laugh. They have to work. … Comedy is hard to do. It looks easy when you see it, but it's really difficult to pull it off."
