Cultural Affairs Season to Close with Concerts on April 29 & May 6

Posted on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 [9:22 AM]

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College community will close out the college's 2011-12 cultural affairs schedule with two concerts.

On Sunday, April 29, the Lindsey Wilson choral ensembles will be joined by the Commonwealth Strings and LWC Professor of Music Robert Reynolds for an evening concert at Columbia Christian Church.

The concert begins at 7 p.m. CT at Columbia Christian Church, 206 Campbellsville St.

Then on Sunday, May 6, the Lindsey Wilson Concert Band will give a 2 p.m. CT concert at Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive.

Both concerts are free and open to the public.

The April 29 concert will be directed by LWC Associate Professor of Music Gerald L. Chafin. It will feature the choral pieces Vivaldi's Gloria and Haydn's Missa Brevis. Featured student soloists will be Gloria Moore of Columbia, soprano, and Jessica Massengale of Vine Grove, Ky., contralto, with Allison Chafin of Columbia, as the assistant conductor of choral ensembles. Reynolds will perform Mozart's "Piano Concerto No. 14 in E Flat, K. 449."

The concert will also mark the 15th time LWC's choral program has collaborated with members of the Louisville, Ky.-based Commonwealth Strings.

"We have enjoyed a collaborative partnership with the Commonwealth musicians for 15 years," Chafin said. "And, of all the concerts we have recently produced, this concert will have the most classic, elegant and formal appeal for listeners."

Haydn's Missa Brevis will serve as a warm-up for 15 LWC students who will travel in June to Italy to take part in the Rome International Choral Festival at the Vatican.

The May 6 concert by the LWC Concert Band will be directed by Director of Instrumental Ensembles Tim Allen. The concert will feature an eclectic collection of compositions, from Mozart to Glenn Miller.

"A concert that everyone should enjoy," Allen said. "Such a variety, from serious Mozart to as light as (Miller's arrangement of) 'Pennsylvania 6-5000.'"
