Bonner Scholars Program Gives $2,000 to Adair County Schools

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College Bonner Scholars Program awarded $2,000 in grants Tuesday to Adair County schools. The grants will be used to enhance after-school programs at Adair County Elementary School and Adair County Primary Center.

The grants were administered on behalf of the Corella & Bertram F. Bonner Foundation of Princeton, N.J., which helps support the LWC Bonner Scholars Program.

A $1,500 grant was given to Camp Casey, a long-running after-school program that has been held at Colonel William Casey Elementary School and will be held this fall at Adair County Primary Center; and a $500 grant was given to Camp Safari, a developing after-school program at Adair County Elementary School.

"We are so pleased to be able to assist both of these outstanding after-school programs," said Lindsey Wilson College Director of Civic Engagement and Student Leadership Amy Thompson-Wells, who helps oversee the Bonner Scholars Program. "Both of these programs assist hundreds of Adair County families and strengthen our schools."

Camp Casey served more than 350 school children in 2012-13, and Adair County Schools 21st Century Director Dana Harmon said she expects it to serve even more students this school year when the program moves to Adair County Primary Center.

After being tested with a limited number of students in 2012-13, Camp Safari will be open to this school year to all students at Adair County Elementary School, which includes kindergarten through sixth grade.

Created in partnership with the Bonner Foundation, the LWC Bonner Scholars Program aims to transform the lives of students, the life of their campuses, their local communities and the world through service and leadership. During the 2012-13 school year, LWC Bonner Scholars donated more than 29,000 hours of community service to 15 non-profit groups in the region.

Earlier this summer, the LWC Bonner Scholars Program received an AppLE Award from Forward in the Fifth in Somerset, Ky., for its support of education in Adair County.
