Founders' Day, Concert Conclude Academic Celebration Week

Posted on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 [2:52 PM]

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College community will conclude a week of academic celebration with Founders' Day on Thursday, April 25, and a spectacular spring concert on Sunday, April 28.

The college community kicked off Academic Celebration Week on April 22-23 with more than three dozen student presentations about undergraduate research projects conducted this school year with the college's faculty. April 22 included a guest speaker, and April 23 featured a recital by tuba and piano.

Thursday, April 25, features honors convocation, which will be held at 3:30 p.m. CT in Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive. At the ceremony, academic awards will be given to the top students, including the President's Award, which is presented to the outstanding senior. The new class of Begley Scholars will also be presented April 25.

The annual Founders' Day Dinner will be held at 6 p.m. CT Thursday, April 25, in Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center, 430 Helen Flatt Drive. LWC President William T. Luckey Jr. will deliver the keynote address.

The weeklong celebration will culminate with a concert at 6:30 p.m. CT Sunday, April 28, at Columbia Christian Church, 206 Campbellsville St.

The program will include selections from J.S. Bach's Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Piano Concerto in F Major, Ernst von Dohnanyi's Piano Quintet in C Minor, and Faure's Requiem.

The concert will feature the Lindsey Wilson choral ensembles under the direction of LWC Director of Choral Activities Gerald Chafin. Featured musicians will include Hana Park, Hannah Warren and LWC Professor of Music Robert Reynolds, piano; Saelim Henderson and Wansoo Cho, violin; Denis Santos, viola; Saulo DeAlmeida, cello.

"This is one of the most special and enjoyable weeks of the school year because it celebrates what a liberal arts college is all about -- the life of the mind," Luckey said. "The quality of undergraduate research being done on campus is so impressive right now, and that is reflected in the outstanding graduate and professional schools that have admitted our students this spring."

At the Founders' Day Dinner, Luckey plans to talk about the college's "phenomenal growth" over the last decade. LWC's enrollment has increased by 69 percent to its record 2,677; faculty has grown by 93 percent to its record 114; more than 300,000 square feet of academic and residential space have been added; and residential student population has blossomed to its current level of 1,099.

"In many ways, this isn't even the same college it was 10 years ago," Luckey said. "You don't always see the grass grow, but when you look back on it over a period of time, it's a truly remarkable story."
