Why Choose Sustainability & Environmental Studies?

Baccalaureate degrees are offered by many colleges and universities in Kentucky. However, only Lindsey Wilson College offers a BA degree in Sustainability & Environmental Studies. Specifically, AASHE (The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education) list two sustainability-oriented degrees from Berea College and one at UK. Upon further searches, six 6 schools in the state are offering only courses or minors in sustainability related topics.

The Sustainability & Environmental Studies program will prepare students for work, advanced study and citizenship by engaging them in project-based education enhanced by community partnerships and focused on energy sustainability and applications.

This education program directly targets the strategy for "Transformational Talent Development."

According to "America's Energy Future" (NAS 2009a), "Accelerated deployment of sustainability technologies in the buildings, industrial and transportations sectors could reduce energy use by 15% in 2020." This holds true even with demand for electric power in the U.S. expected to increase 40% by 2030.

For example, the Bureau of Labor Statistics provides information about jobs in green industries.
