The Fifth Season of Theatrefest Features Two Comedies
COLUMBIA, Ky. - Two comedies will celebrate this summer's fifth season of TheatreFest! at Lindsey Wilson College.
Last Train to Nibroc, a romantic comedy about two people searching for happiness, will open the season June 22. It runs through June 30. The season's other production is Lying State, a political farce about a dead senator, which opens July 13 and runs through July 21.
Both productions - which will be presented at V.P. Henry Auditorium, 210 Lindsey Wilson St. - are directed by Lindsey Wilson Assistant Professor of Theatre Robert Brock.
The casts of TheatreFest! productions include Lindsey Wilson theatre students as well as members of the community.
"For our students, TheatreFest! has been a great opportunity for them to focus on their craft," Brock said. "And for members of the community, TheatreFest! has given them a wonderful artistic outlet."
Arlene Hutton's romantic comedy Last Train to Nibroc - which runs June 22, 23, 29, and 30 - tells the story of Raleigh and
May.
The two young Kentuckians meet in 1940 on a train carrying the bodies of Nathanael West and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Raleigh, the man, is inspired to leave Kentucky to seek a literary career in New York. May, on the other hand, wants to return home to maintain her life of diversion. Native Kentuckians, Court Mace and Caitlin Corder bring this production to life as Raleigh and May.
"I think that what is great about this show is that people around here will get the humor and the seriousness of different moments throughout the show." Brock said. "Arlene Hutton did an amazing job of capturing the culture of Kentucky in this play and I think that audiences are going to love meeting Raleigh and May."
Lying in State - which will run July 13, 14, 20 and 21 - is a comedy by David Hyer. This play will feature a cast full of members from previous TheatreFest! Seasons to ensure hilarity.
The fast-paced political farce centers on Senator Ed who, through an unfortunate turn of events, was killed by several bullets caused by his shooting at squirrels. The rip-roaring production gets off to a wild start at the funeral parlor where we meet his ex-wife Edna, his campaign manager, brother and an ex-exotic dancer who claims to be Ed's fiancée, looking for the Senate seat he promised her.
"This play is going to have people rolling with laughter from start to finish." Brock said. "It's going to be a lot of fun for us to watch these very eccentric characters come to life in rehearsal and then it will be even more exciting to let audiences in on their lives."
