Mission Statement

The purpose of the Lindsey Wilson College music minor is to provide professional education and instruction in music to students.  The music minor is designed to help students grow in basic musicianship, understanding of musical concepts, developing aesthetic values, and acquiring a conceptual understanding of musical properties and their interrelationships.

Students majoring in another area may desire to minor in music with an emphasis on performance to further diversity their liberal arts education.  The music minor program is a resource for those seeking a comprehensive music education and for all who wish to enrich their lives through involvement in music.  The academic purpose is to advance the college’s mission by providing undergraduate professional training in music and in music as a liberal art.

 

By these means, the music program provides artistic and cultural enrichment for the college and the surrounding communities.  Additionally, the program works to preserve artistic heritage and to facilitate new creative expressions.

 

Graduation Requirements

Some courses taken for the minor will simultaneously fulfill general education requirements.  Please see the Graduation Requirements (bachelor’s degree) section of this catalog for information on the general education program.

Students should note that the minor contributes only a few hours toward the required 39 hours of 3000-4000 level coursework.  

Program Requirements

Along with the general education program and a major, students must complete the minor’s core requirements and must complete Ensemble hours and take Applied Lessons as indicated.

A.  Core Requirements:  10 hours

  •  Music Theory I (MUSI 1613) – 3 hours
  • Music Theory II (MUSI 1713) – 3 hours
  • History of Music Literature (MUSI 2533) – 3 hours
  • Recital Capstone (MUSI 4901) – 1 hour

B.   Ensembles (select one of the following emphasis areas):  7 hours

1.   Instrumental Emphasis (choose 7 hours from the following)

  • Band (MUSI 1161, 2161, 3161, 4161) – 1 hour

2.   Vocal Emphasis (choose 7 hours from the following)

  • Concert Choir (MUSI 1151, 2151, 3151, 4151) – 1 hour
  • Lindsey Wilson College Singers (MUSI 1171, 2171, 3171, 4171) – 1 hour

C.  Applied Lessons:  8 hours

  • Applied Music (MUSI 1512) – 2 hours*
  • Applied Music (MUSI 2512) – 2 hours*

*Applied Music is repeatable for a total of 4 credit hours.

 

Note:        The program coordinator typically approves and distributes information about additional electives in various disciplines each semester.

 

Exit Assessment

Graduation requirements for students with a minor in music are as follows:

  1. Minimum of a 2.0 Content/Emphasis Area GPA; and
  2. Minimum of a 2.0 Recital Capstone GPA.

 

Students applying for graduation with a minor in music must schedule, plan, rehearse, and successfully perform a recital (Recital Capstone) on their main instrument/voice.  The recital may consist of all solo repertoire or combination of repertoire varying from solo, duet, trio, chamber literature, etc.  This recital must be a minimum of 25 minutes.  The recital will be assessed via the Recital Rubric scoring sheet by the instructor and an ensemble director (choral director for vocal, band director for instrumental).
