Mission

The English faculty is committed to a program that stresses excellence in the study of language, literature, and writing. The program curriculum emphasizes intellectual development, critical analysis, cultural literacy, and global awareness. In addition to acquiring a deeper understanding of and appreciation for language, literature, and writing, the skills and knowledge students gain also fully prepare them for graduate and professional schools, teaching language arts at the middle grades and secondary levels, and an array of careers that demand highly developed abilities in critical thinking, research, and writing.
Selected English courses also fulfill general education requirements, support the teacher-education degree programs, and provide elective courses for all students.

Program Distinctions

Majoring in English puts students at the center of Lindsey Wilson College's intellectual life. Our majors study traditional literary masterpieces in American and British literature alongside the works of new and emerging voices from the U.S. and around the globe. In addition, the program offers diverse courses such as Greek Myth and Literature, Women Writers, Global Literature, Studies in Genre, Writing and Culture, and Advanced Writing. Seniors work closely with faculty members in completing their senior thesis, an original research-supported project.  English majors may also apply to work as tutors in the Writing Center or as Writing Fellows in the College's across- the-curriculum writing initiative, Lindsey Writes. A newly developed Preceptor program provides select students the opportunity to gain valuable exposure to teaching on the college level. Throughout the academic year our Sigma Tau Delta honor society students gather for social and professional development events. The English program also maintains close relationships with faculty and courses in Women's Studies, History, American Studies, and the Humanities.

Our Students Succeed and Make a Difference

What do our students and graduates say about the English program?

"I hope to use my experience as an English major here at Lindsey Wilson College to fuel a lifetime of literacy in both others and myself and to stress the importance of being able to write and express oneself well...." John Pyron, Class of 2004

"The English Department was essentially a group of intelligent people validating the things that most fascinate me. Writers. Stories. Words. Ideas. Their enthusiasm for literary things reminded me almost daily that I loved being an English major...." Emily Blaser, Class of 2002

"The greatest thing I learned during my four years at Lindsey Wilson is the fact that there is so much that I don't know. It's ironic that the more I learn, the clearer it becomes how little I know. Ignorance may be bliss, but education is something tip_shanklin_class_outside.JPGbetter...." Jason Simpson, Class of 2003

"A degree in English is, without a doubt, a life-changing course of study for any student interested in pursuing it. Not only did the Lindsey Wilson College English program prepare me for my career as an educator with vital content knowledge, but it reinforced and improved my ability to think. The in-depth study of literature, writing, and all aspects of scholarship strengthened me as an individual in a way that no other experience possibly could. I am proud to call myself an English Major, and even more so since I obtained my knowledge from such an exemplary program as that offered at Lindsey Wilson College...." - Jared Criswell, Class of 2009

Why choose English?

While believing that a degree in the liberal arts is a priceless process of self-discovery, cultural awareness, and lifelong learning, the English faculty is dedicated to helping its students pursue rewarding careers after graduation. Our graduates gravitate toward careers in law, academia, secondary education, publishing, marketing, and communications, and so every year the program sponsors tutorials on GRE, LSAT, and GMAT test preparation for graduate, law, and other professional graduate school programs. Recent graduates are enrolled in graduate English programs at the University of Louisville, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Cincinnati, and in Washington & Lee and William & Mary schools of law.
