  This course will introduce the theory and practice of community development. It will cover a brief history of community development in the United States and will explore various models of practice. The course will discuss the significance of the nonprofit organization in the United States and the role that community development plays in the modern workforce. It will look at current issues such as education, health care, social justice, globalization and sustainability and how community development plays such an important role in strengthening communities. The course will also explore the concept of service learning and how it is different from volunteer work/community service. There will be a practical component for this course; students will work together to complete a service-learning project as a class.
