LWC Welcome First Half of Class of 2016

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Jacob Roberts admitted it was "a little bit odd" to be registering for college less than three weeks after graduating from high school. But the Owensboro, Ky., did just that on Friday at Lindsey Wilson College, along with more than 360 other students who will be freshmen this fall at the liberal arts college.

Roberts, who graduated from Owensboro High School on May 21, was one of 366 students who participated in an LWC EDGE day May 31-June 2. Two more EDGE days will be held this summer, July 20-21.

EDGE -- which stands for education, development, growth and experience -- is a daylong orientation program for incoming freshmen. The event introduces freshmen to the LWC community and gives them several opportunities to meet faculty, staff and students.

In the morning, student EDGE leaders conduct team-building sessions that introduce freshmen to other incoming students and talk to them about what's required to be successful in college.

"It's up to you -- what expectations you are going to set for yourself in college," LWC Freshman Advisor Laura Burwash told a classroom of freshmen gathered Saturday morning in Dr. Robert and Carol Goodin Nursing and Counseling Center. "It's a little scary to come to college and seem like you are starting over, but there are a lot of people who are here to help you succeed."

After lunch, incoming students and their parents convened in Biggers Sports Center to finalize financial-aid paperwork, receive a parking permit and library card, receive a class schedule, and view LWC's academic and extracurricular opportunities.

"It was a good way to meet new people," said Roberts, who will major in sports management while playing on the Blue Raider baseball team. "They give you a lot of information you need for when you get here in the fall. It's a little bit odd to be doing this (right after high school graduation), but this is a good transitional thing to do right now."
