COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The fusion folk quintet Reel World String Band will perform at 7 p.m. CT Friday, Nov. 8, in the Lindsey Wilson College W.W. Slider Humanities Center Recital Hall.

The concert -- which is part of the 2013-14 Lindsey Wilson Cultural Affairs Series -- is free and open to the public.

The Lexington, Ky.-based, all-female group has performed its unique blend of folk-styled music for more than three decades.

A review in The New York Times said the Reel World String Band performs music that is "ideal for dancing and just generally letting loose the spirit."

The band fuses several techniques to produce an exclusive folk sound that includes classic fiddling, Bluegrass harmonies and a keen ear for lyrical detail. One critic described the quintet's sound as a mixture of country, swing, blues and jazz.

Reel World String Band features: Sue Massek on banjo; Bev Futrell, guitar and harmonica; Karen Jones, fiddle; Elise Melrood, piano; and Sharon Ruble, bass. The members have diverse musical backgrounds, but the one common thread they share is Kentucky -- they are either from Kentucky, have ties to Kentucky or attended college in the commonwealth.

Reel World String Band has performed at festivals and events and has also been featured in several independent films, including You Got To Move, From Calumet to Kalamazoo and The Southern Sex.

The Reel World String Band will perform 7 p.m. CT Friday, Nov. 8, in W.W. Slider Humanities Center Recital Hall, 155 Blue Raider Drive. For more information, contact Cultural Affairs Series Chair Phil Hanna at hannap@lindsey.edu or or (270) 384-8102.
