Garmoline Carpenter - Honorary Alumna (Posthumously)
Garmoline Carpenter taught physics and physical science at Lindsey Wilson College for more than 23 years. Almost every LWC student from 1966 to 1990 was enrolled in at least one of Carpenter’s college courses.
A devoted educator, Carpenter personified the LWC mission. For her, every class meeting was an opportunity to make a lifelong impact on a student. She regularly spent personal time developing and refining course lectures. Her commitment was evident as generations of students would often approach Carpenter with words of gratitude about the difference her teaching made in their lives.
Upon retirement from LWC in 1990, Carpenter was named Professor Emerita, one of only five professors to receive Emeriti status in the 118-year history of the College. She was a passionate supporter of LWC, frequently in attendance at alumni events, athletic competitions and other College functions.
Carpenter earned a bachelor’s degree from Campbellsville (College) University and a master’s degree from Western Kentucky University. A native of Russell County, Ky., she taught at Russell County High School before she joined LWC’s faculty in 1966. She was married to Kamos Carpenter who served LWC as Registrar. The couple retired so they could spend more time farming. Together they ran KC Farms in Russell Springs, Ky., and in 2011 Garmoline received the Russell County Outstanding Women in Agriculture Award. Carpenter was an active member of Union Baptist Church in Russell Springs.
Carpenter passed away on April 13, 2020. She was 91. She is survived by a son, Dante, who still operates the family farm; and one granddaughter, Elise Carpenter, who is studying Agriculture Business at Wilmington (Ohio) College -- following in her grandmother’s footsteps.
