LWC To Celebrate 89th Homecoming, Class of 2020 In-Person Commencement

Columbia, KY - An in-person commencement ceremony will be held to recognize the members of the Class of 2020 during Lindsey Wilson College's 89th homecoming weekend, Oct. 1 and 2.
The in-person commencement ceremony is for all students who graduated in 2020 whose final year at LWC was interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.
“We’ve experienced an extraordinary year and a half. It is exciting to finally have the opportunity to bring people back to campus and celebrate all the things we have missed, as well as the things we have accomplished,” said Lafawn Nettles, who was named LWC Director of Alumni Relations last fall.
LWC’s 89th homecoming celebration will kick off on Thursday, Sept. 30, with two events: a faculty and staff homecoming reunion cookout at 11 a.m. CT, and a *pep rally with fireworks at 7:30 p.m. CT. Both events will take place on the campus quadrangle, 400 Helen Flatt Drive.
The Class of 2020, invitation only, in-person commencement ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. CT, Saturday, Oct. 2, on the campus quadrangle.
“It’s always great to have everyone back on campus, but this year it is just incredibly special,” said Nettles. “We have longed to return to normalcy after more than a year of uncertainty and disappointment. We hope this event can be a joyous time for everyone.”
The Alumni & Friends Homecoming 5K will be held on Saturday morning, Oct. 2, at the Doris and Bob Holloway Health & Wellness Center, 399 Williams St. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. CT, and the race starts at 8 a.m. CT.
*The Alumni Awards Celebration scheduled to be held on Saturday has been canceled. The four individuals selected as 2021 award recipients by the LWC National Alumni Association will be recognized at a later date. The individuals receiving alumni awards:
- Karen Sue Pendleton ’60 Wilson of Bowling Green, Kentucky, will receive the Distinguished Alumna Award;
- Kasey Compton ’10 of Somerset, Kentucky, will receive the Outstanding Young Alumna Award;
- Linda McKinley ’68 Grider of Columbia, Kentucky, will receive the Distinguished Service Award;
- And longtime friend and former LWC Professor of Physics and Physical Sciences Garmoline Carpenter of Russell Springs, Kentucky, will be named an honorary alumna, posthumously.
*The Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony has been postponed. The rescheduled event will be announced by the LWC Athletics department.
The Bonner Scholars will host a come-and-go service opportunity from 9:30-11 a.m. CT on Saturday. Those interested can meet at the Wilkerson Bonner House to serve alongside Bonner alums.
*The Alumni Tailgate Zone, sponsored by 93.5 WAIN, will be open from 3-5 p.m. CT, on Saturday at the Lindsey Wilson Sports Park - Egnew Park, and is free for all LWC alumni.
Homecoming weekend will conclude with the crowning of the 2021 LWC homecoming king and queen at halftime of the football game between LWC and Cumberland (Tenn.) University at Parnell Family Stadium, Lindsey Wilson Sports Park, 820 Hanley Lane. *Kickoff has been updated to 5 p.m. CT.
