LWC EDUCATION

WHY CHOOSE EDUCATION?
Teachers have a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students. They interact with these learners every day, helping them discover new, important facts and ideas. Teachers are directly influential in a student's life - it's an important reason why many people choose to become teachers.
MISSION
The mission of the Education Program is to prepare teacher candidates in a Christian learning environment with the knowledge, skills and dispositions required to be successful, reflective teacher-leaders in the 21st century.

Teacher Pay Scales and Benefits
As you consider a career as a teacher, it's important to ask yourself where you might want to teach. Different states have different pay scales and benefits for teachers as well as varying costs of living. Kentucky provides its educators with not only a competent retirement system, but with comprehensive health coverage as well.
Loan Forgiveness
Most teachers qualify for loan forgiveness at the federal and/or state level. Under the Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program, if you teach full time for five complete and consecutive academic years in a low-income school you are usually eligible for forgiveness of up to $17,500 on your student loans. For more information visit studentaid.gov or education.ky.gov.
Loan Cancellation
A teacher with a loan from the Federal Perkins Loan Program, teaching at a qualifying low-income school or in certain subject areas can qualify for loan cancellation. Up to 100% of the loan may be cancelled for teaching service. 15% is canceled for the first and second years of service, 20% is canceled for the third and fourth years of service, and 30% is canceled for the fifth year of service. For more information visit education.ky.gov.
The Teach Grant Program (Pipeline Shortage Grant)
The TEACH Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 each year to students who are completing or plan to complete coursework needed to begin a teaching career. Unlike other federal student grants, the TEACH Grant requires recipients to agree to complete four years of teaching in a high-need field and underserved school as a condition for receiving the grant.
