New Student Orientation Days Welcome the Class of 2023 to LWC

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Less than three weeks after closing the 2018-19 school year, Lindsey Wilson College welcomed the first installment of the Class of 2023.

The college held the first of five New Student Orientation Days scheduled for the summer on Thursday. NSO is a daylong orientation program for incoming freshmen. The day introduces freshmen to the LWC community and gives them the opportunity to meet the college's faculty, staff and students.

Thursday's NSO attracted 78 incoming freshmen. Two more will be held Friday and Saturday, then the final two will be July 19-20.

"New Student Orientation is the next step in preparing our students for their college career," said LWC Admissions Counselor and NSO coordinator Emily Carnall. "By the end of the day, we want students to know what to expect when they return for classes in August.”

Mahalia Cain of Williamsburg, Ky., was one of those freshmen who appreciated the opportunity to explore campus in advance and meet new people.

“I definitely love the welcoming environment from the orientation leaders,” said Cain. “They were very friendly and helpful. I feel super prepared. It was an informative day and an overall great experience to be able to connect with students that I will be with for the next four years.”

In the morning, student orientation leaders conducted team-building sessions that introduced freshmen to other new students, while their parents attended an information panel. After lunch, incoming students and parents convened in the Doris and Bob Holloway Health & Wellness Center to finalize financial-aid paperwork, receive a parking permit and a class schedule, and view LWC's academic and extracurricular opportunities.

“The great thing about New Student Orientation is that it is a low-key and fun way for freshmen to acclimate to the LWC community,” said LWC Director of Student Activities Lafawn Nettles. “The day is designed to ease the transition between finishing high school and starting at Lindsey Wilson.”

LWC move-in day for incoming residential freshmen will be on Saturday, Aug. 17 and Tuesday, Aug. 20 is the start date for day classes on the A.P. White Campus. For online and evening students, classes for the fall 2019 semester will begin on Monday. Aug. 19.
