Five Students Named Recipients of the Alumni Walkway Scholarship

alumni walkwayFive Lindsey Wilson College students have been selected as recipients of the Alumni Walkway Scholarship. 

The top finalist, LWC media studies junior Malachi Rogan of Henderson, Tenn., received a $2,500 scholarship. Malachi is a first-generation college student and a member of the LWC football team and the Football Team Leadership Council. He credits LWC for his growth both academically and personally. 

“Being at a school like LWC has helped me focus more on my schoolwork…my teachers and coaches have done a great job holding me accountable and encouraging me to prepare for life after college,” said Rogan. “While at LWC I have learned that to succeed I must have maximum effort, a positive attitude, and a consistent relationship with God.”

Scholarships were also awarded to business management junior Cade Estes of Paducah, Ky.; education senior Sarah Hall of Somerset, Ky.; psychology senior Sydney Hubbard of Shepherdsville, Ky.; and business administration senior Trevor Reynolds of Danville, Ky.

The Alumni Walkway Scholarship was created by the LWC Alumni Council as a way to directly impact the student body. Originally funded by individual contributions and proceeds from the memorial Alumni Walkway, the scholarship is now supported by alumni donations. In total, $7,600 was awarded by the council to the students. 

Director of Alumni Relations Hannah Peck is excited by the growth of the scholarship program.

"When this scholarship originated, the council was awarding around $500 to one student,” said Peck. “The growth of this scholarship is a labor of love by our alumni for our current students. It is a beautiful thing."  

Longtime alumni council member and board trustee Carrie Luker '76 Farris says she enjoys serving on the scholarship committee because of the personal interaction with students.

“When we read the essays, we learn about their lives and aspirations,” says Farris. “When we interview them, we hear their dreams and hopes. We even feel their energy and nervousness…later, when we see them on campus and can call them by name, we both feel connected. We alumni can even become friends and mentors to these young people and assist in their networking efforts.” 

This year’s scholarship committee included: Jerald Bryant ‘94, Drew Sadler ‘09, Lafawn Nettles ‘02, Allison Cross ‘09, Hannah McCandless ’17, Carrie Luker ‘67 Farris, Jesse Cook ‘06, and Emily Carnall ’12. The committee reviewed 28 applications selecting five finalists to participate in an interview. 

Emily Carnall says that due to the Covid 19 pandemic, interviews were conducted virtually. 

"The pandemic has forced us to adapt,” said Carnall. “This was a learning lesson for us as a council, but also great practice for our finalists. We were able to engage with the students, and while different, it still appropriately allowed them to share their story with us."
